Do you know the story of why bonsai plants are nurtured to such
a small size? It's not what you would imagine! The story begins with the
ancient Chinese medicine man who served as the doctor of his time. There were
no hospitals and the medicine man had to reach people by traveling on foot to
villages and remote areas of the countryside. He carried his medicine bag on
his back-but it wasn't full of pills and tablets because the medicines were
herbs, roots, and leaves from special plants and trees. And they had to be
fresh to have their healing effects, so they could not be gathered from the
plants and carried on long journeys. The entire living plant or tree was needed
to produce fresh medicine and the medicine was needed continuously during the
medicine man's long journeys. What was the medicine man to do? He trimmed the
trees and plants he needed and planted them in small vessels-the more he
trimmed them, the smaller they became! And the more he trimmed them the more
leaves and finer roots they produced! So the art of bonsai was born from the
healing art of the medicine man and these "small plants" soon became prized
possessions of the wealthy who wanted their own store of healing medicinal
plants at home.
And today our bonsai
plants are healing in more ways than producing medicinal plants and trees-which
